In January and February 2019 I worked with 15 women from three Asian Women’s group based at Well Women’s Centre, Next Generation Youth & Community Project and Swafia Mosque to create a silk painted textile piece celebration their identity, communities and stories.
The project was funded by the National Archives in partnership with the West Yorkshire Archives.
We used the idea of a setting for a meal to bring together the many different strands; traditional fabric patterns from Pakistan and Kashmir created the centrepiece, the historic maps of Mirpur in Pakistan where many of the women came from became the lace border and personal artefacts, sayings and beliefs decorated the plates.
